Addiction/Substance Use/Tobacco Cessation One-Time Requirement: Section 2914 (e) of the Business and Professions Code requires that every applicant for licensure who began graduate training on or after 9/1/85 must show evidence of having completed training in the detection and treatment of alcohol and other chemical substance dependency. Section 1382.3 of the California Code of Regulations further defines this requirement. This regulation requires that this training be completed in a single course, and the course must be a semester or quarter in length (or 15 contact hours). (1) Historical and contemporary perspectives on alcohol and other drug abuse. (2) Extent of the alcohol and drug abuse epidemic and its effects on the individual, family, and community. (3) Recognizing the symptoms of alcoholism and drug addiction. (4) Making appropriate interpretations, interventions, and referrals. (5) Recognizing and intervening with affected family members. (6) Learning about current programs of recovery, such as 12 step programs, and how therapists can effectively utilize these programs. |

Child Abuse and Maltreatment One-Time Requirement: Child Abuse Training: This law further requires that the course "include the study of the assessment and method of reporting of sexual assault, neglect, severe neglect, general neglect, willful cruelty or unjustifiable punishment, corporal punishment or injury, and abuse in out-of-home. The training shall also include physical and behavioral indicators of abuse, consequences of failure to report, caring for a child's needs after a report is made, sensitivity to previously abused children and adults, and implications and methods of treatment for children and adults." Among other things, section 1382.4 requires that the requirements set forth in section 28 of the B & P Code be completed in a single course. |

Domestic Violence/Dependent Abuse One-Time Requirement: Spousal/Partner Abuse: The course must cover spousal or partner abuse assessment, detection, and intervention strategies, including community resources, cultural factors, and same gender abuse dynamics. Equivalent courses in spousal or partner abuse assessment, detection and intervention strategies or proof of equivalent teaching or practice may be submitted to the board and, at its discretion may be accepted in satisfaction of this requirement. This coursework must be completed in a single course. An applicant who began graduate training on or after January 1, 2004, must complete a minimum of fifteen (15) contact hours of coursework in spousal or partner abuse assessment, detection and intervention strategies. This training must be completed in a single course. Coursework taken outside the regular course of study may fulfill this requirement at the Board's discretion. |

Ethics/Laws/Rules/Jurisprudence Under the current regulations, there is no hour requirement or certificate required for Laws & Ethics. Licensees must check a box self-certifying that they have kept abreast of changes to laws (statutes and regulations) and ethics. There is no specified method regarding how the information must be obtained. Licensees can take a continuing education course, review Web sites, participate in grand rounds, etc. The training shall include recent changes/updates on the laws and regulation related to the practice of psychology, recent changes/updates in the Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct published by the APA, accepted standards of practice, and other applications of laws and ethics as they affect the licensees ability to practice psychology with safety to the public |
