Course Overview

Breast cancer is the most common cancer (excluding skin cancer) that women may face in their lifetime. According to the National Cancer Institute (NCI), about one in eight women (12.8%, or 127.5 per 100,000 women) will develop breast cancer at some point during their lives. In 2019, for females in the U.S. there will be an estimated 41,760 deaths from breast cancer, constituting 6.9% of all cancer deaths. Statistics from the NCI over the past ten years indicate that rates of breast cancer in women have been increasing an average of 0.3% per year. This is in contrast to falling mortality rates of 1.8% each year over the same period (2007-2016), supporting the increase in 5-year survivorship. A team of healthcare professionals can be an excellent source of information and support to patients, family, and caregivers during every phase of the disease continuum. For example, patients may experience a high level of anxiety during the prediagnostic period, and healthcare professionals across disciplines can help patients by keeping them informed about what to expect. This two-part series on breast cancer explains the disease, risk factors, diagnostics, and treatments. This second course focuses on treatment options and therapies.
