Course Overview

Only about half of American adults engage is the recommended aerobic activity as outlined in the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans. Health care professionals need to understand the latest exercise guidelines to make the best recommendations for their patients. This course will discuss the latest exercise guidelines, contraindications to exercise, and dietary guidelines for Americans.

About the Course Author

Ann Elsasser-Root holds a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from the University of Pittsburgh. She has experience working as a physical therapist in multiple care settings, including skilled nursing, independent living, inpatient rehab, and outpatient orthopedic and neurology. Ann has a strong manual therapy background and has completed additional training in geriatric care, kinesiotaping, vestibular rehabilitation, and McKenzie MDT for the lumbar spine. She is most passionate about treating the older population to improve quality of life and maximize functional independence. As a curriculum designer for Relias, Ann enjoys being able to combine her clinical knowledge with her interest in research and staying up-to-date with changes and advances in the field of rehabilitation. Elizabeth Kellerman MSN, RN started in nursing in 2007 after graduating from Samuel Merritt University in Oakland, California. While working in a critical care unit at Sutter Mills-Peninsula Hospital she earned her CCRN and TNCC. Her experience and knowledge led her to nursing education where she taught at a community college while working to receive her Master's in Nurse Education at Western Carolina University. As a nursing instructor, she spent time in many types of care settings including medical-surgical inpatient and community living centers. Her passion for education and training has most recently led her to a position as subject matter expert and content writer for Relias.
