Course Overview

Oncology emergencies are dangerous complications resulting from cancer. Conditions covered in this module include the more common emergencies, such as sepsis and tumor lysis syndrome, with mention of more rare conditions, such as superior vena cava syndrome and malignant spinal cord compression. Coagulation emergencies, such as disseminated intravascular coagulation, are discussed in this module, as are metabolic emergencies of electrolyte disturbances. In addition to basic pathophysiological details and disease mechanisms, primary care interventions and client teaching points will be presented in the context of current best-practice references.

Jennifer M.L. Stephens, MA, PhD, RN, OCN, is an oncology nurse with more than a decade of experience in medical/surgical oncology, cancer critical care, bone marrow transplant and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Stephens received a PhD in oncology nursing from the University of British Columbia (UBC) in Vancouver and is active with the Canadian Association of Nurses in Oncology (CANO/ACIO) and Oncology Nursing Society (ONS). She has worked as an oncology nurse in the U.S. and Canada, with roles ranging from staff nurse to clinical nurse educator, outpatient clinic coordinator to oncology program manager. She is currently teaching for UBC, Athabasca University, and the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT).
