Course Overview

Myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome affects an estimated 836,000 to 2.5 million adults in the U.S. with a constellation of debilitating symptoms, including severe fatigue, pain, sleep disturbances, and cognitive problems. Fewer than 10% of people who meet the strict case definition criteria have been diagnosed and treated by a healthcare professional. ME/CFS is defined as debilitating fatigue that is not alleviated by rest and results in substantial reduction in previous levels of occupational, educational, social, or personal activities. Specific tests do not identify ME/CFS; therefore, current recommendations suggest diagnosis requires the following: the existence of six or more months of continuous fatigue not related to other conditions and unrelieved by interventions; fatigue which interferes with ADLs; and four or more of a set of eight symptoms such as disordered sleep, pain, diminished concentration, and post-exertional malaise.
