Course Overview

Breast cancer is the most common cancer (excluding skin cancer) that many women may face in their lifetime. According to the National Cancer Institute (NCI, 2019a), about 1 in 8 women (12.8%, or 127.5 per 100,000 women) will have a lifetime probability of developing breast cancer. This disease will touch the lives of most health professionals of various disciplines in ways that might be professional or personal. It is projected that 41,760 women in the U.S. will die from breast cancer in 2019, constituting 6.9% of all cancer deaths (NCI, 2019a). The National Cancer Institute states that breast cancer in women has increased on average by 0.3% per year for the past 10 years (NCI, 2019a). However, mortality rates are decreasing by 1.8% each year resulting in a 5-year increase in survivorship (NCI, 2019a). The American Cancer Society (ACS) released new breast cancer screening guidelines in 2015 and for high risk patients in 2019. The guidelines include changes to mammogram and breast self-exam recommendations. This two-part series on breast cancer explains the disease, risk factors, diagnostics, and treatments. This first course discusses risk factors, screening, and diagnostics.
