Course Overview

Recent changes in clinical practice guidelines for the management of hospital-acquired pneumonia (HAP) and ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) suggest that the previous guidelines that recognized healthcare-associated pneumonia (HCAP) as a distinct category of pneumonia that develops in non-hospitalized with exposure to healthcare (e.g., long-term care facilities, hemodialysis, home infusion and/or wound care, etc.) was defined too broadly. Thus, many of these patients received inappropriate antibiotic therapy. This has contributed to the problem of antibiotic resistance and patient harm. Recently published guidelines for CAP) include new and revised recommendations to address this problem and clarify factors to be considered when selecting empiric antibiotic therapy in patients who develop CAP. This course discusses changing clinical practice guidelines for the management of pneumonia that develops in non-hospitalized patients. It is applicable to interdisciplinary professionals including, clinical laboratory personnel, pharmacy professionals, physicians, radiology professionals, dieticians, and nurses.
