Course Overview

Alcohol use during pregnancy can cause birth defects and developmental disabilities collectively known as fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASDs). The term “fetal alcohol spectrum disorders” refers to a group of conditions that may occur in a person if his or her mother drinks alcohol during pregnancy. Fetal alcohol syndrome is the most serious form of FASDs. Its prevalence is estimated to be about eight in 1,000 in the general global population. In the U.S., Russia, and much of the world, FASDs are the leading preventable causes of birth defects and mental retardation. A child with FASDs can have cognitive, mental, physiologic, and social-emotional deficits that negatively impact development. Nurses, speech-language pathologists, audiologists, and other healthcare professionals can educate women about the importance of not drinking while pregnant and help with referrals for treatment when appropriate.
