Course Overview

Islam is the second-largest and fastest-growing religion in the world. Followers of Islam are known as Muslims or Moslems. It’s also acceptable to refer to followers as “Islamic.” Muslim-Americans are the most racially diverse religious group in the U.S. Twenty-eight percent of the national Muslim population is African-American, while 38% of Muslim-Americans classify themselves as “white.” About one in four identify themselves as “Asian,” 4% are “Hispanic,” and the remainder classify as “other.” Muslim traditions can impact health-related perceptions and healthcare practices as well as interactions with healthcare providers. Dietary practices can also influence the health status of Muslims who may abstain from certain foods and beverages and practice fasting during the holy month of Ramadan. Nurses caring for patients across the lifespan from the neonatal unit to the hospice unit need to know specific customs and practices that provide spiritual comfort in times of distress and mourning. This CE course gives healthcare providers information about providing culturally competent care to patients who are Muslim.
