Course Overview

Heart failure is a common condition of the heart that is a complex clinical syndrome resulting from a structural or functional cardiac disorder in which the ventricle cannot adequately fill or eject blood. Heart failure is categorized as an end-stage heart condition that results from or is worsened by other chronic conditions. Heart failure has a major impact in the United States as well as globally regarding mortality, hospitalizations, and economics. Currently, there is no cure for heart failure; however, appropriate long-term management of guideline-directed therapy involving self-care and nonpharmacological and pharmacological management has improved morbidity and mortality. The majority of this interdisciplinary program focuses on the 2013 and 2016 updated guidelines for heart failure management from the American College of Cardiology, American Heart Association, and Heart Failure Society of America. Since the 2016 update, there have been a few changes and recommendations for the management of heart failure.
