According to the National Center for Health Statistics, 450,000 babies were born prematurely in 2012. That is 1 in every 9 babies born in the United States. Factors contributing to the increased survival of premature infants include prenatal corticosteroid therapy and early surfactant therapy to reduce the incidence of respiratory distress syndrome. Nutrition therapy plays a vital role.

Kendra Glassman, MS, RD, CNSC, CSSD, works as a neonatal dietitian and supervises the infant nutrition center at Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children at Presbyterian St. Luke's Medical Center.     Evaluate the benefits and drawbacks of the methods available to administer enteral feedings; Describe the impact that the registered dietitian can have on outcome measurements in the NICU; Describe the indications for parenteral nutrition in the NICU; Describe the various enteral formulas used in the NICU and the indications for each formula category; Determine if formula is handled safely and if not, develop a plan for improvement; Develop the skills to obtain a comprehensive diet history in the NICU; Discuss the various inborn errors of metabolism and their treatment strategies; Evaluate a NICU patient and write evidence-based recommendations for parenteral or enteral nutrition; Evaluate the macronutrient and micronutrient needs of full-term and premature infants; Identify nutrient deficiencies in NICU patients; Identify the most appropriate growth chart to plot an infant’s anthropometric measurements; Identify the unique nutrition-related challenges that a former premature infant may experience after discharge from the NICU; Recognize feeding practices that are inappropriate for an infant’s corrected age and/or developmental stage; Recognize the impact of various medical and surgical factors on the nutritional status of an infant; Understand the health benefits and unique nutritional qualities of human breast milk; Write an appropriate plan to monitor tolerance to feeding
