Course Overview

Do athletes truly require sports drinks? What about beverages such as chocolate milk? Do energy drinks safely provide energy? For athletes, whether recreational or competitive, the proper fuel is as vital as training to performance. The right combination of nutrients helps athletes excel at their sports. Proper nutrient intake staves off fatigue and may prevent poor performance that occurs even when athletes “feel good” prior to or during competition. Proper liquid nutrition supports appropriate fueling when time constraints are present and gastrointestinal disturbance is a risk. By understanding the ingredients and nutrient balance of various sports drinks, liquid recovery or meal replacement drinks, and energy drinks, registered dietitian nutritionists and other healthcare professionals can recommend appropriate products to their most physically active clients based on sport-specific fuel requirements to maximize both training and performance.
