Course Overview

Traditionally, registered dietitian nutritionists have been involved in quality assessment processes but may not be aware of the shift to quality assessment performance improvement that focuses on collaborating with interdisciplinary teams throughout their hospital systems. With regulatory agencies requiring sustained and documented QAPI and reimbursement based on quality of care, RDNs must be involved in quality initiatives. Participating in your hospital’s comprehensive QAPI program can help get you there. Healthcare reform aims to advance high-quality, patient-driven care and reduce healthcare costs. The RDN can demonstrate how nutrition care is an effective way to reduce costs and improve care while working in a collaborative and interdisciplinary manner. The RDN cannot improve on what he or she does not measure or act on. RDNs must understand their hospital’s QAPI programs and engage in performance improvement activities to advance their traditional roles in the hospital setting. Increased visibility will show other healthcare providers how RDNs can improve outcomes and related quality measures.

Julie Charnosky, MS, RD, LDN, is a clinical dietitian and the owner of Start Fresh Nutrition. She has worked in clinical nutrition management and food service operations throughout her career and was a department leader in her hospital for QAPI using the lean management system.
