Course Overview

Most healthcare professionals are at a loss to explain why some patients compliant with dietary advice continue to have elevated blood glucose, blood pressure, and/or cholesterol levels. The reason may lie in our genetic makeup and how our genes affect our vulnerability to diseases. This course explores our current knowledge about one such gene: the apolipoprotein E gene. This gene has three genetic variants: APO-E2, APO-E3, and APO-E4. Each variant affects our lipid metabolism differently. Emerging research is beginning to offer insight into how genetic variants may impact personalized nutrition needs and disease risk.
