Course Overview

Lymphedema occurs when there is an increase in fluid in soft body tissue from trauma or dysfunction of the lymphatic system. Damage interferes with the ability of the lymph fluid to move through the body. Lymph fluid circulation is critical to keeping the body healthy because it collects bacteria, viruses, and waste products. Evaluating the impact of lymphedema and providing individualized treatment is essential to supporting occupational engagement and enhancing quality of life for clients. This learning module provides occupational therapy professionals with an overview of the lymphatic system and lymphedema, how lymphedema impacts a person's function and quality of life, and evidence-based methods for treatment.

The goal of this educational program is to provide occupational therapists with an understanding of occupational deficits associated with lymphedema and treatment options available.
