Iowa Department of Public Health Bureau of EMS Requirements

Iowa certifications must renew every 2 years.  IAC 641-131.4(4). Four CE hours during the certification period must include a minimum of one hour in the following topics [IAC 139.4(3)(c):
     -Infectious diseases
     -Abuse (child and dependent adult)
     -Trauma emergencies
     -Medical emergencies
Effective 7/1/2019, the Iowa Department of Human Services (DHS) will take over responsibilities for mandatory reporting training. Only courses provided by the Iowa Department of Human Services will be accepted to meet this requirement.  
 
Requirements for Paramedic Specialists:
60 hours of continuing education every two years.  IAC 131.4(5)(b)(5).
 
Requirements for Paramedics:
48 hours of continuing education every two years.  IAC 131.4(5))(b)(4).

Requirements for EMT-I/AEMT: 
36 hours of continuing education every two years.  IAC 131.4(5)(b)(3).

Requirements for EMTs:
24 hours of continuing education every two years.  IAC 131.4(5)(b)(2).

Requirements for EMT-Defibrillator:
24 hours of continuing education every two years.  IAC 131.4(5)(b)(2).
 
Requirements for EMT-Ambulance:
24 hours of continuing education every two years.  IAC 131.4(5)(b)(2).
 
Requirements for EMR:
12 hours of continuing education every two years.  IAC 131.4(5)(b)(1).
