Summary:

Low-calorie sweeteners and controversy seem to go hand in hand, with some members of the media continually fueling concerns about their safety and lack of efficacy by widely broadcasting negative studies and staying tight lipped on positive results. A small but growing number of low calorie sweeteners are approved for use by regulatory bodies around the globe, including the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Approvals are based on numerous required safety studies with post market surveillance often a stipulation of approval. Regular reviews conducted by various regulatory agencies continue to demonstrate their safety. A growing body of evidence is demonstrating how low-calorie sweeteners, as part of an otherwise healthy eating plan, can be a tool to help people meet their health and nutrition objectives. Get an update on this evidence as well as a practical perspective on this topic.

Objectives:

The goal of this webinar is to provide an overview of the current evidence on the health concerns of excess added sugars consumption and the safety and efficacy of low calorie sweeteners in weight management to enable healthcare providers to offer research-based practical advice to people they counsel to reduce added sugars consumption. At the conclusion of this webinar participants will be able to:
  • Discuss the current intake of added sugars in the U.S. and related health concerns
  • Describe the differences between the FDA process for a food additive and GRAS ingredient and identify the key elements for safety review of food additives
  • Explain the results of recent research focused on the efficacy of low calorie sweeteners in weight management.
  • Teach people they counsel how to change their beverage choices to reduce consumption of added sugars for health/disease prevention, and weight management.
