Summary:

Inattentional blindness is an interesting phenomenon that can have a profound influence on perception and decision-making. Inattentional blindness is as an occurrence that happens when one is concentrating on a main task so that one misses detecting an unanticipated object or change in one’s environment. The level of attention needed for a task or specific features of the unanticipated thing that could be overlooked influence the risk of inattentional blindness occurring.

Objectives:

The goal of this presentation is to describe the phenomenon of inattentional blindness for the healthcare team. Upon completion, learners will be able to:
  • Explain the phenomenon of inattentional blindness and its history.
  • Discuss how instances of inattentional blindness can occur in everyday healthcare practice.
  • Demonstrate use of observational, analytical, and critical thinking skills to evaluate changes in daily practice to avoid potential instances of inattentional blindness for the healthcare team.
