How much vitamin D do we need to maintain health? This is not an easy question to answer because a debate exists in the scientific evidence about the recommended daily intake. Not long ago, vitamin D was primarily viewed as a nutrient needed for bone health. In recent years, countless studies have suggested it plays a role in a multitude of other chronic conditions, including cancer, cardiovascular, and autoimmune diseases. In addition, a growing number of people have been identified as vitamin D deficient. This module presents the latest evidence for intake levels higher than the dietary reference intake, risk factors for vitamin D deficiency, and ways to treat a deficiency with supplementation.

About the Course Author

She is a private-practice registered dietitian based in Charleston, South Carolina. She focuses on infertility, preconception, prenatal, and postnatal health. She earned a B.S. in human nutrition from the University of Florida in Gainesville and her M.S. in clinical nutrition from Rush University in Chicago, Illinois. She later earned her CLEC certification at University of C-San Diego.
