Course Overview

A substantial body of research suggests that athletes and active people benefit from a protein intake of 1.2 g/kg/day to 1.7 g/kg/day. This range is higher than the general recommendation of 0.8 g/kg/day to 1 g/kg/day. Because a significant amount of dietary protein is allocated to the muscle growth desired by athletes, additional protein is necessary to support baseline health, such as proper immune function. Additionally, protein choice and timing affects muscle development. This continuing education course discusses how much protein is needed for various types of activities, the optimum carbohydrate-to-protein ratio, the best time to eat protein to maximize muscle building and strength, and the best protein-containing foods for building muscle.
