Course Overview

People with disabilities who present behavior challenges are one of the more difficult populations to work with in schools and clinics. Direct services are often interrupted when behaviors such as aggression, noncompliance, temper tantrums, and self-injury occur. Research indicates that problem behaviors can lead to low academic achievement, poor social skills, juvenile delinquency, and limited employment opportunities. Unfortunately, research indicates most educators do not have the sufficient behavioral knowledge and skills needed to address challenging behaviors effectively. Applied behavior analysis is related to understanding why problem behaviors occur and creating intervention plans designed to address the needs of clients with challenging behaviors. The use of these behavioral technologies can decrease the incidence of these behaviors and teach more socially acceptable alternatives.
