Course Overview

Acute radiation sickness (ARS) is caused by a radiological accident resulting in the contamination or overexposure of humans and/or the environment to radioactive material, secondary to an unforeseen event. The radiological consequences include external and internal contamination, leading to serious hematopoietic, gastrointestinal, and neurological syndromes. The severity of these syndromes depend on the dose of radiation exposure as reflected in the reduction of circulating lymphocyte counts. Radiation dosimetry, along with other laboratory tests, is performed to quantitate the exposure dose. The treatment plan of ARS is developed based on the radiation dose and its effects, symptomatic care, use of growth factors, platelet transfusion, bone marrow transplantation, and more. The aim of this course is to provide professionals with a comprehensive guideline for the interpretation of clinical criteria for radiation dose assessment, dose/symptom relationships, and to design treatment plans for victims with radiation injuries.
