Course Overview

A tracheostomy procedure is a common surgical procedure performed to create an opening in the trachea to help a person breathe. It may be performed as an elective or emergent procedure and may be done in the operating room or at the patient’s bedside. The terms tracheostomy and tracheotomy essentially signify the same procedure. The term tracheostomy will be used for this module. This course will primarily focus on open tracheostomy performed in the operating room. The goal of this course is to provide surgical technologists with information about tracheostomy indications, techniques, and potential complications.
