Course Overview

Tinea pedis, better known as athlete’s foot, is a fungal infection of the feet characterized by itchy, scaly soles, and painful fissures between the toes. It can be transmitted from human-to-human contact in warm, humid environments. Treatment for tinea pedis centers on both non-pharmacologic and pharmacological measures. Topical antifungals are often the mainstay of therapy; however, oral medications may be considered for more severe and recurrent infections. Pharmacists and technicians should be aware of the signs and symptoms of tinea pedis and be knowledgeable about over-the-counter recommendations, including antifungal treatment duration, proper administration directions, and potential adverse effects of therapy. This is essential because patients with athlete’s foot may present in a variety of settings, including retail, ambulatory, long-term, and hospital care.
