Course Overview

Infertility disrupts the lives of millions of couples in the U.S. The National Survey of Family Growth reports that from 2011 to 2015, 12.1% of women ages 15 to 44 years had impaired fecundity (ability to get pregnant or carry the pregnancy to term), and 6.7% of all married women in the same age group were unable to conceive despite a year of regular unprotected intercourse (infertile). Although an average infertile couple eventually achieves pregnancy, many struggle through rigorous treatments to do so, which is evident by the 7.3 million women between the ages of 15 to 44 who have used infertility services. This continuing education module describes causes of infertility, medical and surgical treatments, and the role nurses play.

About the Course Author

Barika Bridges, MSN, WHNP-BC, is a nurse instructor/consultant with a healthcare management consulting firm. She has more than 10 years of experience in women’s health as a labor nurse, women’s health nurse practitioner at a private OB/GYN practice, and adjunct clinical instructor at the University of Central Florida. While in practice, she has managed women with infertility, PCOS, abnormal uterine bleeding, and other gynecologic issues.
