Summary:

Anxiety disorders are one of the most common mental health disorders. Most people who have an anxiety disorder not only suffer from adverse mental symptoms but a host of physical changes. Despite the high prevalence of these disorders in society, the condition is both undertreated and underdiagnosed. The enormity of these disorders has led to more effective treatments and better education of healthcare providers and patients. The estimated lifetime prevalence of anxiety disorders varies from 2.3% to 7%. Treatment involves a combination of psychotherapy and/or medications. The drugs of choice for the treatment of anxiety disorders are antidepressants, especially the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). These drugs have a better safety profile and fewer adverse reactions compared with the older tricyclic antidepressants.

Objectives:

The goal of this anxiety disorders continuing education program is to provide pharmacists, EMTs/paramedics and social workers with information about generalized anxiety and related disorders, their epidemiology, presentation and treatment. After you study the information presented, you will be able to:
  • Describe the various types of anxiety disorders
  • List the different classes of drugs to treat anxiety
  • Discuss the management of patients with panic disorder, social phobias and posttraumatic stress syndrome
