Medical errors have long been identified as a significant public health concern. All healthcare professionals must work together as a team to prevent medical errors from occurring within their organization. This course closely examines the prevalence and various causes of medical errors and proposes prevention strategies. In this course, you will learn about causes of medical errors and ways they can be prevented.
The content in this course is applicable to social workers, marriage and family therapists, and mental health counselors.


After taking this course, you should be able to:
  • Describe medical errors, patient safety events, and sentinel events.
  • Identify your responsibility in reporting medical errors.
  • Explain the use of root cause analysis for identifying the cause of medical errors.
  • Identify factors that cause medical errors or situations that are prone to medical errors.
  • Discuss ways to prevent medical errors.

Social workers participating in this course will receive 2.0 general continuing education clock hours.

After reading the presentation, complete the course test online. With a score of 75% or better and completing the evaluation, you may immediately print your CE certificate of completion or save a pdf of it for your records. You may also request a copy to be sent to you by mail. If your score is less than the passing score of 75%, you may retake the test. In the event of loss, there is no charge for a replacement copy of a CE certificate.

When a participant, either orally or in written format, files a grievance, a member of the Provider Unit Planning Committee will evaluate the nature of the complaint. If it is meritorious, a member of the Provider Unit Planning Committee will instruct the staff to implement any necessary changes in the course. The complainant will receive a response from a member of the Provider Unit Planning Committee or designated staff within 5 working days.
If the results of the grievance process are unsatisfactory, New Jersey social workers have the option to contact the approving entity, with an option to appeal to their licensing board.
