Summary:

Women in prison are highlighted in news items and entertainment series, making them highly visible in American society. There are more than 108,000 women in state and federal prisons and more than 102,000 detained in local jails. With extensive histories of physical, sexual, and emotional abuse, incarcerated women can benefit from a trauma-informed care approach that recognizes the significant likelihood of past traumatic events in a female prisoner’s history. The cumulative effect of past victimization and the ongoing potential for victimization during incarceration can be devastating. Experts encourage healthcare professionals across disciplines to be sensitive to increased self-injury, maladaptive behaviors, and suicide attempts in this patient population.

Objectives:

The goal of this program is to describe the characteristics of women incarcerated in U.S. correctional facilities; their complex medical and mental health needs; social and family considerations; and the challenges and opportunities for nurses, physical therapists, and social workers caring for female inmates. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • List factors that are more prevalent in incarcerated women than incarcerated men or in women in the general population
  • Outline important health needs of incarcerated women
  • Describe challenges and opportunities for healthcare professionals providing care to incarcerated women
