Summary:

Women in prison are highlighted in news items and entertainment series, making them highly visible in American society. There are remain more than 108,000 women in state and federal prisons and more than 102,000 detained in local jails. With extensive histories of physical, sexual and emotional abuse, incarcerated women can benefit from a trauma-informed care approach that recognizes the significant likelihood of past traumatic events in a female prisoner’s history. The cumulative effect of past victimization and the ongoing potential for victimization during incarceration can be devastating. Experts encourage healthcare professionals across disciplines to be sensitive to increased self-injury, maladaptive behaviors and suicide attempts in this patient population.
