Summary:

Social anxiety disorder, previously called social phobia, is a relatively common condition that creates significant distress for those affected. Certain types of social or performance situations trigger it. The person often attempts to deal with the anxiety by avoiding all situations that may trigger it. Social anxiety disorder is treatable; the main barrier is often the patient and caregiver’s lack of awareness of the problem and of the potential for treatment. In everyday life, social anxiety disorder is often misinterpreted as shyness. People with the disorder are frequently misperceived as being aloof or uncaring. In the healthcare setting, social anxiety disorder can masquerade as nonadherence. With knowledge about this common but often hidden disorder, healthcare professionals as a team can help when they ask pertinent and sensitive questions that may bring the patient closer to diagnosis and treatment.

Objectives:

The Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) requires OnCourse Learning to verify the number of clock hours awarded through a pilot testing process. Please help us by completing the survey at the link on your certificate. The survey will take approximately 10 minutes to complete. Based on the results, the clock hours awarded may be amended for this course. Please call (800) 866-0919 with any questions. Thank you for your assistance.
