Hoarding disorder is the excessive accumulation of possessions and the inability to discard them. The focus on possessions makes HD a diagnosis distinct from other anxiety disorders, such as obsessive-compulsive disorder. While treatment is slow and relapse frequent, specialized psychotherapies that target HD symptoms are associated with positive behavioral changes. This course describes characteristics of hoarding disorder underlying neurological and psychological factors, and evidenced-based interventions for healthcare professionals working with people who suffer from HD.

The goal of this continuing education module is to inform nurses, social workers, and other healthcare professionals about hoarding disorder and its treatments and to offer options for clinical responses. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Identify defining behaviors and characteristics of a hoarding disorder
  • Discuss neural, cognitive, and emotional/psychological underpinnings of hoarding disorder
  • Describe three interventions in the treatment of people who hoard
