Summary:

The number of older drivers is increasing. There were 40 million licensed drivers aged 65 and older in 2015, a 33% increase from 10 years earlier. In contrast, the total number of licensed drivers in the United States increased by only 8% between 2006 and 2015. Older drivers made up 18% of all licensed drivers in 2015, compared with 15% in 2006. In 2015, more than 6,800 older adults were killed and more than 260,000 were treated in emergency departments for motor vehicle crash injuries. This amounts to 19 older adults killed and 712 injured in crashes on average every day. Healthcare professionals need to be able to recognize the age-related conditions that can influence an older adult’s driving ability and be familiar with resources that can help older adults maintain their driving skills. By exploring the many resources and becoming knowledgeable in these areas, healthcare professionals can contribute to the safety of both older drivers and the public.

Objectives:

The goal of this older driver continuing education program is to describe the nurse’s and social worker’s role in promoting safe mobility for older drivers. After you study the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Describe the effects of aging and common age-related medical, cognitive, and psychological conditions on the older driver
  • Describe the roles healthcare professionals can take in promoting the older driver’s safe-driving practices
  • Name resources to which healthcare professionals can refer concerned individuals
  • Describe the current research addressing older driver safety
