Summary:

As people’s life spans increase, those who live longer are more likely to experience chronic illness and disease. Research highlights the importance of quality of life for people living with disabilities and chronic illness. However, despite recognition that sexuality is an important component of a person’s quality of life, access to accurate and personalized sexuality healthcare information is often lacking in healthcare institutions. This module will explore types of disabilities, models for conceptualizing sexuality and disability, common changes due to disability or chronic illness that impact sexuality, social/societal challenges for those with disabilities that impact sexuality, changes in sexual functioning, and treatment options. Opportunities for addressing sexuality within healthcare settings will be discussed.

Objectives:

The goal of this continuing education program is to provide a general background on sexuality and disability and to enhance understanding of how sexuality and disability interact, overlap, and have an impact on the lives of those served within the healthcare system. After studying the information here, you will be able to:
  • Explain a model for conceptualizing sexuality and disability.
  • Discuss how symptoms of a disability (e.g. pain, spasticity) may impact sexuality.
  • Identify important issues and concerns to address in patients with disabilities who report difficulties with sexuality.
