An estimated 4% to 20% of troops returning to the U.S. have or will experience PTSD. While some affected service members will immediately seek mental health services for their distress, the majority will initially request health services for physical symptoms if they seek help at all. As troops return home, they will seek healthcare in hospitals and clinics throughout their communities. Nonbehavioral health practitioners must understand the symptoms and functional sequelae of PTSD, evidence-based screening tools, and suggestions for referral for appropriate mental health evaluation and intervention.

The goal of this post-traumatic stress disorder continuing education module is to prepare occupational therapists, social workers, dietitians, dietary managers, fitness professionals, health educators, physical therapists, and physicians to determine why, when, and how to refer high-risk patients for evaluation of trauma-related mental health problems. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Describe the causes and key signs/symptoms of PTSD as they appear in daily life and healthcare contexts
  • Discuss the unique challenges encountered by returning service men and women, and how PTSD can complicate the transition to civilian life
  • Describe effective ways to provide evidence-based screening, referral for evaluation, and mental healthcare services to a patient with probable PTSD and transition stress
