Summary:

Suicide rates for males ages 65 and older have been high. While in recent years there has been a shift to higher suicide rates in the middle years, there is still concern regarding suicide risk in older males. The changes in suicide rates are seen at the CDC website. A cause for concern is findings that not every hospitalized patient with a high risk for suicide was referred for a psychiatric evaluation. Healthcare providers also frequently miss opportunities for mental health diagnosis and referral in primary care settings. To have an impact on late-life suicide, healthcare providers must know what symptoms to look for and routinely screen for depression to determine suicide risk.

Objectives:

This course will be discontinued on November 15, 2019, because a new version of it (SW277G Preventing Late-Life Suicide) is now available.
