Summary:

Social anxiety disorder, formerly known as social phobia, generally has its onset in childhood or adolescence, but it may also appear in adult populations. About 40% of child or teenage patients recover before reaching adulthood. However, social anxiety disorder is chronic and debilitating, which results in poor peer relationships and limited success in social interactions. Identifying the diagnostic criteria of social anxiety disorder according to the DSM-5 is insufficient in and of itself when treating children and adolescents.

Objectives:

The goal of this continuing education program is to provide social workers with information about the definitions, prevalence and treatment of social anxiety disorder. After studying the material presented here, you will be able to:
  • Describe the prevalence and epidemiological rates of social anxiety disorder
  • Differentiate alternative diagnoses
  • Explain the pharmacological protocols best suited for use with children and adolescents with social anxiety disorder
