Much of the literature indicates that although most people, given the choice, would prefer to die at home, many will die in institutions. Caring for a patient approaching the end of life continues to challenge the most skilled, educated, and talented practitioners. Healthcare providers have an obligation to address end-of-life issues with patients and families by addressing concerns, such as fear of abandonment, losing control of bodily functions, and being overwhelmed with pain or distress. This module will provide an overview for clinicians who provide comfort and support to dying patients and their families, regardless of the setting in which care is provided.

The goal of this continuing education program is to update and enhance nurses’, physicians’, and social workers’ knowledge about end-of-life care in patients and its application in any setting. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Describe physical and psychosocial issues associated with dying patients
  • Identify two cultural variations when dealing with dying patients
  • Describe two interventions for grieving families
