Summary:

Anxiety can be mild, moderate, severe, or even escalate to panic. While mild anxiety may be protective, a severely anxious person is so focused on specific details that he or she can’t think of anything else, and behavior becomes directed toward relieving the anxiety. Generalized anxiety disorder is excessive and unreasonable anxiety and worry that lasts at least six months. Panic is associated with loss of control and a sense of dread, with increased motor activity, reduced ability to relate to others, and distorted perceptions. With PTSD, recurring intrusive memories of a traumatic event, troubling nightmares, and even flashbacks occur in which the person feels that he or she is reliving the event. The goal of this continuing education program is to update healthcare professionals’ clinical knowledge about screening, identifying, and treating the most common types of anxiety disorders through a variety of medications and therapeutic modalities.

Objectives:

The goal of this continuing education program on anxiety disorders continuing education program is to provide healthcare providers about screening for, identifying, and treating the most common types of anxiety disorders. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Define anxiety and identify two causes
  • Describe the common symptoms and treatments of five anxiety disorders
