The extent of substance use and process addictions among any given population is difficult to quantify, partially because many cases are not detected. However, estimates indicate that 14 million people in the United States met the criteria for alcohol abuse or dependence; 20 million people reported using an illicit drug during the month before a 2007 survey. Screening for addictions, similar to other facets of clinical work, must account for multiple biological, psychological, social and spiritual factors.

The goal of this screening for addiction-related disorders module is to review screening instruments for substance use disorders and process addictions. After completing this module, participants will be able to:
  • Identify screening instruments for detecting substance (alcohol, drug) and process (i.e., eating, gambling and sex) addictions
  • Explain the way screening instruments are used and interpreted
  • Discuss the prominent concepts, constructs and life domains that are linked to addictive disorders

it is not very up-to-date, as it still quotes the DSM-IV-TR as the primary diagnostic manual.

I learned a lot. I am happy to learn all the specific ways of observing and assessing people who need help. I have a current MAST and wasn't really sure of what it was all about. When I heard the word Cesear.. I didn't know it was alcohol assessing. Sezier, I now know, that it is a 25 step assess towards alcohol abuse. I learned about Gambling support SOGS and I learned about mother's drinking, TWEAK. Productive course. Thanks.
