Summary:

The coming out process is a definitively unique and fluid process for each person. However, there appear to be five common elements related to decision-making and the evaluation of self-awareness and readiness to disclose, timing, assessing level of acceptability, evaluating the capability to manage myriad reactions and planning for the potential positive or negative impact. These elements may differ based on age, sex, gender, identity, race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status and religion.

Objectives:

This coming out continuing education module will assist those working with the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community to better understand the multifaceted challenges of coming out at various stages across the life span and the overall impact on well-being. After completion of this module, readers will be able to:
  • Identify key concepts associated with the theoretical origins of coming out
  • Discuss risk and protective factors related to the well-being of those actively managing the coming out process, struggling with remaining closeted or having to re-closet oneself
  • Define key practice approaches to best assist those with coming out and enhance overall well-being
