The coming-out process is a definitively unique and fluid process for each member of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community. However, there appear to be common elements in the decision-making process and evaluation of self-awareness and readiness to disclose, which are related to timing, assessing level of acceptability, evaluating the capability to manage myriad reactions, and planning for the potential positive or negative impact. These elements may differ based on intersectionality factors associated with age and age cohort, sex, gender, identity, race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status, urban or rural location, and religion/spirituality.

This continuing education module will assist those working with the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community to better understand the multifaceted challenges of coming out at various life stages and the overall impact on well-being. After completion of this module, readers will be able to:
  • Identify key concepts associated with the theoretical origins of coming out
  • Discuss risk and protective factors related to the well-being of LGBT individuals actively managing the coming-out process, struggling with remaining closeted, or having to re-closet themselves
  • Define key affirming practice approaches to best assist LGBT clients with coming out and enhance enhancing their overall well-being
