Summary:

Just 25 years ago, women were barely a shadow in the criminal justice system — they made up less than 5% of the prison population in the United States; two-thirds of women who appeared in federal court were given probation. Today, the percent of women entering the prison system has increased dramatically. Parolees face a multitude of difficulties in trying to reenter the community outside the prison. They remain largely uneducated, unskilled and usually without solid family support systems. Women offenders often have very limited knowledge and unrealistic expectations about the world of work, and are often unaware of their employment options.

Objectives:

The goal of this continuing education program about incarcerated women is to provide psychologists and social workers with information about practice skills and challenges of preparing incarcerated women to return to the community. Counseling methods must be adjusted to meet the needs of thousands of women who are released each year from the prison, who may be ill-equipped to return to society. After completing this program, the psychologist or social worker will be be able to:
  • Recall statistics and demographics of women in prison
  • Name practice methods for psychologists and social workers to apply when working with incarcerated women
  • State obstacles incarcerated women face when returning to the community
