Summary:

In clinical bereavement work, counseling practices must be adjusted to the needs of adolescents. Each year, thousands of adolescents experience the death of someone to whom they are attached. When a parent, sibling, friend, or relative dies, adolescents feel the overwhelming loss of a person who helped shape their self-identities. These feelings about the death may stay with them throughout the remainder of their own life stages. Personal encounters with death and bereavement in adolescence, although more widespread than common wisdom would suggest, are not central to adolescent development.

Objectives:

The Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) requires OnCourse Learning to verify the number of clock hours awarded through a pilot testing process. Please help us by completing the survey at the link on your certificate. The survey will take approximately 10 minutes to complete. Based on the results, the clock hours awarded may be amended for this course. Please call (800) 866-0919 with any questions. Thank you for your assistance.

The goal of this adolescent grief and bereavement program is to provide mental health professionals with information about grief and bereavement work using social media network technology with adolescents. After completing this program, the therapist will be able to:
  • Describe the developmental stages of adolescents
  • Identify the stages of grief for adolescents
  • Describe the purposes of using technology with adolescents in mental health settings
