Course Overview

Results from the 2015 National Survey on Drug Use and Health found that 12.3% of girls ages 12 to 17 reported illicit drug use in the past year. The rate of illicit drug use for women overall was 7.7%. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report that about 1 in 5 women reported binge alcohol drinking and among pregnant women, 1 in 10 reported alcohol use. Compared to boys and men, girls and women become addicted to alcohol, nicotine, and illegal and prescription drugs at lower levels of use and in shorter periods of time. They also develop substance-related diseases such as lung cancer more quickly, suffer more severe brain damage from alcohol and drugs such as Ecstasy, and often pay the ultimate price - their lives - sooner. Healthcare providers in a variety of roles and settings are uniquely positioned to provide assessment, early intervention, education, and referral for women with known risk factors for substance abuse.
