Summary:

Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) are at risk for many nutrition related problems such as a limited diet, nutrient deficiencies, gastrointestinal disorders and feeding problems.  Proper nutrition is critical to feed the child’s brain and body so they are in optimum nutritional status to benefit from their numerous therapies such as speech, occupational, physical and behavioral.  A child will not benefit to their full potential from therapy sessions until their nutrition problems are resolved.  Therefore, all healthcare professionals treating children with ASD must take into consideration the child’s nutritional status. This continuing education webinar reviews the role of nutraceuticals such as vitamin/mineral supplement, methyl-B12, vitamin B6, carnitine, omega-3 FA and probiotics in the treatment of ASD.  The role of the registered dietitian and other interdisciplinary team members will be discussed.

Objectives:

The goal of this presentation is to examine the current evidence-based research related to nutritional treatment of autism spectrum disorder. Upon completion of the webinar, learners will be able to:
  • Discuss how nutrition impacts learning, behavior, speech, and brain function.
  • Describe the possible role of various nutraceuticals to treat Autism Spectrum Disorder.
  • Explain the role of the SLP, OT, nurse, pharmacist, MD and other health professionals in nutrition interventions.
