Summary:

Each year, about 17,700 people experience a spinal cord injury (SCI). In the United States, about 288,000 people live with a SCI. As a result, healthcare providers in many settings will care for patients with SCI, not only after the initial injury and rehabilitation, but at any time the patients have health problems. Part 1 of this two-part series focused on the acute management of the patient with SCI. Healthcare professionals as a team can provide the education and tools for people with SCI to learn to become proficient on how to care for themselves. A successful plan of care can be developed only with input from the person with a SCI. It is imperative to include the caregiver(s) in the patient’s education and training. This course provides information about spinal injury rehabilitation and functional potential for people with SCI, recognition and management of chronic complications, interventions for specific physiological alterations, and SCI research trends.

Objectives:

The goal of this continuing education program is to provide nurses, athletic trainers, dietitians, EMTs/paramedics, fitness professionals, health educators, occupational therapists, and speech-language pathologists with information about SCI rehabilitation and the management of chronic SCI. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Describe functional potential for people with SCI at specific levels of injury.
  • Discuss interventions for specific physiological alterations after SCI.
  • Describe signs and symptoms and management of the following complications of chronic SCI: autonomic dysreflexia, chronic pain, spasticity, syringomyelia, and heterotrophic ossification.
