Summary:

The HIV epidemic has slowed from a period of rapid growth during the mid- to late- 1980s to a more stable prevalence. While the number of patients benefiting from antiretroviral therapy is significant, not all patients obtain maximal benefit. This phenomenon is related to varied factors, including the continued associated stigma of HIV-associated disease. This continuing education program will update Florida healthcare professionals’ clinical knowledge of the care of patients with and issues surrounding HIV/AIDS and the Florida state relicensure requirements for healthcare professionals.

Objectives:

The goal of this continuing education program is to update nurses, audiologists, dietitians, EMTs and paramedics, laboratory professionals, massage therapists, occupational therapists, pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, physical therapists, physicians, respiratory therapists, radiologic technologists, and speech-language pathologists with clinical knowledge of patients with HIV/AIDS and to meet Florida state relicensure requirements for healthcare professionals. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Describe the effect of antiretroviral therapy on mortality, comorbidities, and prevalence of HIV/AIDS
  • Identify major infection control measures for HIV
  • Identify Florida-specific legislation about HIV testing, confidentiality, and access to medical care
