Parents and speech-language pathologists (SLPs) develop relationships during speech-language intervention with young children. The nature of these relationships has important implications for the progress of the children. With the support of the literature and themes generated from a qualitative study involving 17 parents and 22 SLPs, this course explores strategies for effective rapport and communication, including support of emotional responses of the parent to the child’s challenges as well as encouragement and empowerment of parents as they participate in intervention. The course also addresses expansion of communication opportunities to maximize the benefit of the parent-SLP partnership.

The goal of this course is to provide speech-language pathologists (SLPs) with a framework for communicating with parents throughout the intervention process with young children, from birth to kindergarten. After studying the information presented, you will be able to:
  • Describe the communication needs for facilitating parent-professional interactions.
  • Discuss the benefits of purposeful communication with parents in both written and verbal forms.
  • Identify and discuss strategies that enhance and support parent-SLP communication.
