Because parents are with their children for many hours each day, their participation in speech-language intervention greatly impacts the effectiveness of the intervention strategies. Speech-language intervention services for young children require commitment and follow-through from parents. Because the degree and type of participation that parents engage in depends on many factors, SLPs must be attuned and responsive to parent needs. This continuing education program focuses on how both SLPs and parents perceive parents’ participation, as well as the roles of SLPs in providing education, resources, and functional outcomes for children and families, guidance in accessing services and navigating systems, and fostering collaborative relationships with families.

The goal of this continuing education program is to inform speech-language pathologists about the needs of parents of young children from the perspective of the parents and the speech-language pathologists who provide speech-language intervention services. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Describe trends in research about parent involvement in speech-language intervention with young children
  • Discuss themes that provide insight into parental needs as they support their children in speech-language goals
  • Explain the importance of being responsive to the needs of parents and their children
