Summary:

Part of the challenge of speech-language-hearing professions is working with colleagues and patients from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. Although the number of nonwhite speech-language pathologists and audiologists remains relatively low (at the end of 2016, 7.9% identified as members of a racial minority), it is on the rise. Cultural sensitivity will become even more important in the future. Although healthcare professionals know they should respect cultural differences, they may not be aware of some key differences that can have a big impact on staff relationships. Being aware of and sensitive to these differences can make professionals more effective and contribute to a more positive work environment. This awareness and sensitivity can also improve relationships with patients and increase their satisfaction. This module provides professionals with knowledge they can use to work with colleagues from culturally diverse backgrounds.

Objectives:

The purpose of this continuing education program in cultural sensitivity is to provide speech-language pathologists and audiologists with knowledge they can use to work with colleagues from culturally diverse backgrounds. After studying the information provided here, you will be able to:
  • Explain two ways in which handshake etiquette differs around the world
  • Describe two common gestures that may be appropriate in one culture and offensive in another
  • Describe two gifts that can have a negative meaning to an international colleague
