Because evidence-based practice in speech-language pathology is at the forefront of clinical decision making, professionals must have a clear understanding of its principles to effectively apply it to daily practice. Patient/family values are an integral part of EBP. Clinicians develop expertise through didactic and mentored clinical learning opportunities. Speech-language pathologists search for evidence in the literature using well-focused clinical questions and search terms. Determining the degree to which treatments with strong empirical support have been delivered with fidelity and measuring treatment outcomes gauge whether to continue, modify, or discontinue the intervention method being used.
The goal of this continuing education program is to provide speech-language pathologists working in medical settings with a model of how to organize their work to facilitate implementation of evidence-based practice, with specific information and examples that will help them overcome barriers that may interfere with application of EBP in clinical practice. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
- Identify the components of EBP and evaluate evidence from the literature
- Formulate a plan to assess the fidelity with which evidence-based treatment methods are implemented in clinical settings
- Formulate a plan to enhance valid and reliable evaluation and interpretation of treatment outcomes
- Prepare a plan to ensure that patient/family values are an integral part of clinical decision making
