Summary:

People with disabilities who exhibit behavioral difficulties can present unique challenges when attempting to implement interventions in schools and clinics. Direct services are often interrupted when behaviors such as aggression, noncompliance, temper tantrums, and self-injury occur. Chronic problem behaviors can lead to low academic achievement, poor social skills, juvenile delinquency, and limited employment opportunities. Effective behavioral approaches to challenging behaviors can provide speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists, and physical therapists direction for the improvement of services and behavioral support.

The content in this course is applicable to speech language pathology professionals.

Objectives:

After taking this course, you should be able to:
  • Define and describe the science of applied behavior analysis as it relates to challenging behaviors and behavior change.
  • Identify the steps required to assess challenging behavior so that the function of the behavior can be identified.
  • Describe the process of creating a behavior intervention plan using the principles of applied behavior analysis and based on the functional behavior assessment results and evidence-based strategies to increase positive behaviors and decrease challenging behaviors.
